This Franchise Can't Die

Ghostbusters: Afterlife (***)

It might make some turn over in their graves to hear it, but I honestly think this was the Ghostbusters film I enjoyed more than any other.

Now, before you start casting stones, I have to admit that this film wouldn’t have been possible without the original movies – obviously. It’s not as if this film didn’t need its predecessors in order to exist. All I’m saying is that I had a good time watching pretty much this whole movie - and as iconic as the original film was, a lot of the humour wasn’t for me. In my book, this film was filled with charming characters, great effects, and most importantly a good story. To top it off, I feel that this film did justice both to the franchise and to the original characters in the way that it furthered their stories.

The kids in this movie were fun and authentic, with Podcast being my favourite. I liked how Gozer returned as the main villain – it kept this film feeling like a true sequel and not just a cash grab. I also was surprised by how much I enjoyed the action scenes. The chase in the Ghostbusters car was a blast from start to finish. It had a bit of a The Force Awakens vibe to it – which may not be a good thing for some, and I get that. But come on, you can’t tell me that Paul Rudd wasn’t a valuable addition to the cast. I thought he was great. The way they brought back the original Ghostbusters didn’t feel forced, and they also weren’t there for too little or too long. They got their moment of spotlight, but the story was still ultimately about the characters we spent the bulk of the film following.

This movie might not be for everyone, but for me, it was a fun popcorn flick that was definitely worth the price of admission.
