Scene Two

Narrator: (reading from the book) This story is called "The Case of the Missing Messiah". Now, Messiah is a bit of a weird word, but it basically means King or Savior, and in that case, our Messiah is Jesus because he is our King and Savior. But there was a time when we didn't know that. Actually, no one on earth knew that! Once, a very long time ago, in the land of Judea, there was a Detective named Dan. (Dan walks on stage, dressed as a detective. He strikes a pose and stands there as Narrator continues reading.) His full name was Dan Dee Lion, (Dan frowns) but he was kind of embarrassed about that so he usually just called himself Detective Dan. Now, Dan wasn't the smartest Detective in the kingdom (Dan frowns again), or the tallest (Dan puts his hands on his hips), or even the best-looking. (Narrator whispers this next part) Sometimes he didn't smell so great either.

Dan: (annoyed by Narrator's comments) Alright, hang on a second! Who are you?

Narrator: (holding up the book for Dan to see) I'm the narrator. I read the story.

Dan: Do you have to say everything that's in that book?

Narrator: That's right.

Dan: Well, could you maybe try spicing it up a little bit?

Narrator: Spicing it up?

Dan: Yeah! Maybe make me look a bit better?

Narrator: Well, uh, okay, I'll try. (reading from the book again) Now, Dan was kind of smart (Dan coughs), I mean pretty smart (Dan coughs again), I mean, Dan was the SMARTEST detective in the whole kingdom.

Dan: That's more like it. (resumes his pose)

Narrator: It's a good thing Detective Dan was around, because the people of Judea had a pretty big case they needed solved. You see, they had been waiting hundreds and hundreds and HUNDREDS of years for someone to show up called the Messiah.

Dan: The what?

Narrator: You know, the Christ. You see, the people of Judea believed in God. And in The Old Testament, God promised his people that he would send someone to rescue them. The Bible said that God was going to send a King better than even King David - you know, the one who killed Goliath - and that he was going to be LITERALLY the Son of God!

Dan: Wow.

Narrator: But after hundreds and hundreds and HUNDREDS of years, God's people started to wonder if this Christ guy was EVER going to show up. So one day, a bunch of the Sanhedrin - they were kind of like a town council - came and talked to Dan.

The Sanhedrin come out from stage right and stand next to Dan, facing him. They mime out what Narrator reads.

Narrator: They told him that they had been looking ALL over for this Savior to come, but they couldn't find him. They really wanted him to show up, because Judea was under control of the Roman Empire, and the Romans weren't very nice all the time. The Sanhedrin wanted Detective Dan to find the Christ so that he could start rescuing God's chosen people!

Dan: Now, now, boys. My services don't come cheap. (The Sanhedrin pull out bags of money and offer them to Dan. Dan looks excited.)

Narrator: The Sanhedrin offered to pay Detective Dan a lot of money, so he decided to start looking for this Messiah immediately.

The Sanhedrin exit stage right, and Dan pulls out a magnifying lens to start looking around the stage for the Messiah.
